50 associations set participation record at Sembrando Color in Puerto del Rosario
The sixth edition of the initiative brings together 50 organisations and, for the first time, extends its programme into the afternoon to introduce the work of social organisations to the whole community and encourage young people to volunteer.
Puerto del Rosario is hosting the sixth edition of the Sembrando Color fair this Friday, with a record 50 associations and organisations from the municipality taking part. The initiative, organised by the Town Council through its Citizen Participation Department, aims to raise the profile of the work these organisations carry out throughout the year, encourage collaboration between them and spark young people’s interest in volunteering.
Jennifer Pérez, the councillor responsible for the department, told La Voz de Fuerteventura that associations had responded strongly to the event. For the first time, its activities have been extended into the afternoon to make it easier for everyone to attend.
“We currently have 50 associations at this fair; it really is a record,” the councillor said, pleased with the turnout for the sixth edition.
A fair showcasing the work of associations
Sembrando Color has become a meeting place for organisations working across different areas of Fuerteventura society. During the event, participating groups present their activities, projects and services, giving visitors the chance to learn more about their work.
Jennifer Pérez explained that one of the main aims is for associations to discover what other organisations in the municipality do and find new ways to work together.
A significant turnout is also expected, with students from the municipality’s five secondary schools attending. For the first time, the event is running throughout the day, with activities in the morning and afternoon.
Volunteering and generational renewal among the main challenges
As well as raising the profile of local associations, the fair aims to address one of the main difficulties facing many organisations: a shortage of volunteers and the need to ensure generational renewal.
The councillor said the issue had been raised at preparatory meetings with associations since last January.
Many of them, she acknowledged, need to bring in new people to sustain their activities and continue supporting those who turn to them for help.
For this reason, the Town Council has made a particular effort to bring the fair to students, so they can learn about the different social realities in the municipality and discover how they can get involved.
The councillor said young people may find among the associations projects connected to circumstances in their own families, or initiatives to which they could devote some of their free time.
Puerto del Rosario mayor David de Vera also praised the work of the municipality’s associations and organisations, highlighting their daily contribution to the social life of the Fuerteventura capital.
He stressed the importance of creating opportunities for people to meet, share experiences and strengthen ties between organisations.
In this respect, he described Sembrando Color as an opportunity to foster new forms of cooperation and unity among associations, while bringing their work to the wider community.
De Vera added that the initiative gives residents an insight into what these groups accomplish throughout the year and publicly recognises their commitment to the municipality.
The sixth edition of Sembrando Color continues on Friday afternoon with activities run by the participating associations. The event aims to strengthen the local voluntary sector and encourage more residents to get involved in their projects.
