AM-CC proposes making municipal land available to boost public housing in Betancuria

The municipal group of Asamblea Majorera – Coalición Canaria (AM-CC) on Betancuria Town Council has tabled a motion to address the problem of access to housing in the municipality, proposing that municipal land be made available to promote the construction of officially protected housing (VPO).

The initiative calls on the governing group to begin the necessary procedures immediately to identify plots owned by the municipality and make them available to other competent administrations, such as the Canary Islands Government or Fuerteventura Island Council, to help facilitate the development of public housing.

AM-CC spokesperson on the council, Enrique Pérez Brito, explained that Betancuria has faced structural difficulties with housing for years because of limited land availability and high costs, which have held back public initiatives. In his view, this measure is key to guaranteeing the right to housing and stemming depopulation in rural areas.

Priority for registered residents

The motion states that any land made available must be used exclusively for protected housing, with priority given to affordable rentals. It also specifies that housing allocations should prioritise people registered as residents in Betancuria, with particular attention to young people and families with roots in the municipality.

Pérez Brito stressed that the Town Council, as the level of government closest to the public, must play an active role in finding solutions. He proposes making the land available to the Canary Islands Housing Institute (ICAVI) or the Island Council so that a lack of land does not continue to prevent young people from staying in their home town.

The motion also proposes that the municipal government formally request Betancuria’s inclusion in the regional public housing plans, offering the availability of land as the Town Council’s main technical and legal contribution.

With this proposal, AM-CC aims to open the way for institutional cooperation to boost public housing in the municipality and respond to growing demand among the local population.
