Fuerteventura Island Council and ecca.edu renew agreement for ‘We Are’ and ‘Wir Sind’ language programmes

Fuerteventura Island Council and ecca.edu have reaffirmed their commitment to the island’s residents by renewing their agreement for the latest edition of the ‘We Are & Wir Sind Fuerteventura’ courses. The agreement will allow them to continue improving residents’ language skills, a key step towards increasing their employment opportunities, particularly in the services sector.

The initiative aims to give the tourism sector and the public at large the tools to improve their English and German. This year’s programme has been expanded to 350 places and, in response to demand from students, a third level has been added in both languages.

The agreement was signed at the Island Council’s Casa Palacio, in the presence of Nuria Cabrera Méndez, Fuerteventura Island Council’s councillor for Finance, Economic Promotion, Human Resources, Sport and Sustainable Mobility; Gorety Almeida Hernández, ecca.edu’s director general; and Carmen Nieves Hernández Díaz, ecca.edu’s representative in Fuerteventura. This strategic partnership strengthens their shared commitment to providing accessible training and inclusive education.

The event also highlighted the programme’s track record: it has run without interruption since 2016. ecca.edu thanked Fuerteventura Island Council for its continued trust and support. Together with the Canary Islands Development Fund (FDCAN), the Council is a fundamental pillar in consolidating the project.

The ‘We Are Fuerteventura’ and ‘Wir Sind Fuerteventura’ language programme was created to give tourism workers and the island’s population the key tools they need to communicate fluently with foreign visitors.

Teaching follows the ecca System, combining flexibility with adapted learning materials that reflect everyday situations set in Fuerteventura.

Students include professionals in hospitality, transport and retail, local security forces, healthcare workers and employees at Fuerteventura Airport, among other strategic sectors.

To help students balance their commitments and ensure accessible support, weekly in-person tutorials will continue at four locations across the island: La Oliva, Puerto del Rosario, Gran Tarajal and Costa Calma.

Applications are now open for these fully funded courses. Interested people can apply through the Island Council’s website (www.cabildofuer.es).

Founded in 1965, ecca.edu is a distance-learning centre for adults with a presence on all eight Canary Islands. Over more than 60 years, it has served more than three million people using its own teaching method, the ecca System, which combines multimedia materials, audiovisual classes and personalised tutoring to provide accessible, flexible and high-quality education. It works in partnership with public and private organisations to bring training to those who need it most.
