CCOO Fuerteventura calls for 11 November General Strike: “Enough of working and still being poor”

CCOO Canarias will hold an assembly on 5 November at 11:00 at the Island Archive in Puerto del Rosario, ahead of the General Strike on 11 November. The meeting will address why the mobilisation is necessary and the importance of making it a collective response to the worsening conditions of life and work.

The assembly will feature Ignacio Hernández, CCOO Canarias’ secretary for trade union action, and Gabriel Alberto Rodríguez, general secretary of CCOO Fuerteventura’s Island Union.

CCOO says there are more than enough reasons to say “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH” in the Canary Islands and in workplaces: enough of having a job that does not guarantee access to decent housing; enough of wages that do not stretch to the end of the month; enough of the deadlock in collective bargaining and of workers continuing to bear the cost of the crisis.

The union highlights in particular the housing emergency and rising prices for groceries, rent, fuel and other essentials. “We cannot talk about economic growth while people who work cannot afford to live with dignity in the place where they work,” says CCOO.

The General Strike is also calling for decent pensions, high-quality public services, affordable housing, and decent jobs and wages, in opposition to growing insecurity that is making it increasingly difficult for workers and their families to build a life.

“We are going on strike on 11 November because we refuse to accept a model in which having a job does not guarantee making ends meet,” says CCOO. The union is urging delegates, members, supporters and workers across Fuerteventura to take part in the mobilisation.

The union says that housing, wages, prices, pensions and public services are not individual problems but collective ones that require a collective response.
