Antigua Town Council announces Peña del Mar festival in Caleta de Fuste, 8–11 October

Antigua Town Council has announced that the Peña del Mar festivities in Caleta de Fuste will take place this October, from 8 to 11 October, with a range of sporting, youth, cultural and leisure events for everyone.

Mayor Juan Cabrera said the festivities were well established in the tourist resort, attracting both residents and visitors. He added that many young people had joined the Festival Committee this year, and that the event represented both tradition and the future.

Festivities Councillor Lucila Ruiz thanked the Festival Committee for its commitment and hard work in putting together a varied programme suited to different tastes and age groups. She also said the opening address would be given by three much-loved local residents, who will be interviewed by pupils from CEIP El Castillo.

“We’re kicking things off with music and a toast. On the morning of Friday 9 October, there will also be a display of vehicles and a presentation of the work carried out by the security forces and services, including the Guardia Civil, the Local Police, the Canary Islands Police and Civil Protection,” the councillor said.

The full programme includes sporting tournaments, the return of the batel boat regatta, a youth party on the beach, a batucada gathering, workshops, a fishing competition, a dessert competition and traditional dances.

Mayor Juan Cabrera said the main day would be Sunday 11 October, with a religious service and procession accompanied by Juan Peña’s folk group. The programme will also feature a lively gathering at the pier, with batel boats, a water party and a performance by the senior citizens’ rondalla, before the Jacomar group brings the festivities to a close.
