Tuineje Town Council steps up response to mosquito outbreak in Tarajalejo
Mayor David Herrera says the area will be fumigated after samples are taken, with the aim of eliminating the source and preventing further outbreaks.
Tuineje Town Council is working with Fuerteventura’s Island Health Directorate to identify the source of the mosquito outbreak affecting Tarajalejo and take the necessary steps to eliminate it.
Mayor David Herrera said he was in regular contact with Tomás Pérez, Fuerteventura’s island health director. Pérez confirmed that a specialist team with expertise in biology had gone to the area today to take samples, set traps and identify the source of the outbreak, so that the necessary control measures could be put in place.
Herrera also travelled to Tarajalejo to oversee the work. He said the site where mosquitoes are believed to be breeding had already been located. However, it will be necessary to wait approximately a month for the sample results to confirm the species and determine the most appropriate treatment to eradicate the source effectively.
Herrera added that “once the samples had been taken, the company responsible for pest control began the fumigation and treatment work needed to eliminate the source and prevent further outbreaks”.
The council’s action aims to address repeated complaints from residents about bites from the insects, which in some cases have caused serious reactions requiring treatment at Gran Tarajal Health Centre.
“From the moment we learned about the situation, we contacted Fuerteventura’s Island Health Directorate to activate a protocol to identify the source and take the necessary steps to tackle a problem that is affecting the daily lives of Tarajalejo residents,” Mayor David Herrera said.
