Fuerteventura Island Council approves removal of power lines from Corralejo Dunes
Fuerteventura Island Council has approved the removal of power lines from Corralejo Dunes.
Fuerteventura Island Council has approved the dismantling of the overhead power line known as ‘Gran Playa’, which crosses Corralejo Dunes Natural Park in the municipality of La Oliva. The favourable report issued by the Territory Planning service marks a decisive step towards removing the network, which runs east to west through this protected natural area.
The Natural Resources Management Plan (PORN) for Corralejo Dunes Natural Park, which the Island Council is currently revising, expressly prohibits overhead power lines in the area. The park is a protected natural area and forms part of the Natura 2000 network.
The report from the Island Council’s Territory Planning service is therefore a crucial step towards the dismantling being carried out by EDISTRIBUCIÓN Redes Digitales S.L.U. The work must make use of existing roads and paths rather than opening new tracks or routes, in order to minimise its impact on the environment. Any localised damage detected must be repaired.
Fuerteventura Island Council president Lola García and Territory Planning councillor Nereida Calero both consider it important to promote measures that safeguard ecosystems and the island’s territory, in the general interest, particularly when such activities are currently prohibited under planning regulations.
The Island Council is continuing work on Natural Resources Management Plans (PORN) for the natural parks of Corralejo, Jandía and Islote de Lobos, as well as Betancuria Rural Park. These documents are key to defining how these areas are protected and used.
