Fuerteventura Island Council brings science and astronomy to Gran Tarajal and Tarajalejo with free activities for all
Fuerteventura Island Council is bringing science and astronomy to Gran Tarajal and Tarajalejo with free activities for all.
Fuerteventura Island Council, through its Department for New Technologies, is continuing to bring science outreach to the island’s municipalities through events organised as part of the ‘Science and Astronomy’ project. The initiative is funded through the Canary Islands Development Fund (FDCAN) and delivered in collaboration with Tuineje Town Council. Under the slogan ‘Explore. Discover. Be amazed. The universe awaits you’, activities will take place in Gran Tarajal on 6 October and in Tarajalejo on 14 October.
Both events are open to everyone and will offer the chance to discover different aspects of astronomy and the universe through hands-on and educational activities. The programme includes solar and meteorite observation, mobile planetarium sessions, astrophotography and meteorite workshops, and night-sky observations.
Carmen Alonso, the councillor for New Technologies, says: “Initiatives like these allow us to bring science to the public in a different way, making knowledge accessible and enabling both children and adults to discover and enjoy astronomy.”
“We want to continue bringing these activities to different parts of the island and create opportunities for science outreach that spark curiosity and interest in science,” the councillor adds.
Gran Tarajal, 6 October
The first event will take place on Tuesday 6 October at the Gran Tarajal Municipal Sports Centre. Solar and meteorite observation will run from 10.00 to 14.00, while the mobile planetarium will hold hourly sessions in the morning, from 10.00 to 14.00, and in the afternoon, from 16.00 to 19.00.
An astrophotography and meteorite workshop will also be held from 16.00 to 19.00. The event will conclude at 21.00 with a night-sky observation in Plaza Tran Tran.
Tarajalejo, 14 October
On Wednesday 14 October, it will be Tarajalejo’s turn, with activities taking place mainly at the Pedro Sánchez Wrestling Arena. Solar and meteorite observation will run from 10.00 to 14.00, while the mobile planetarium will hold hourly sessions from 10.00 to 14.00 and from 16.00 to 18.00.
The astrophotography and meteorite workshop will take place from 16.00 to 18.00. That night, at 21.00, there will be a night-sky observation on Avenida de Las Palmeras, in the restaurant area.
All activities are free and open to residents, visitors and anyone interested in astronomy. Through this programme, Fuerteventura Island Council also aims to showcase the quality of Fuerteventura’s skies and bring scientific knowledge to the public through engaging, participatory experiences.
