The tender has a base budget of €5,181,048.74 and an expected completion period of 16 months.
Fuerteventura Island Council president Lola García highlighted the commitment to increasing social care places on the island, “with people always at the heart of the island administration’s policies”.
As part of this aim, “we are continuing to expand social care resources in Fuerteventura, with the Costa Calma day centre put out to tender for €5,181,048.74”. “This is a much-needed resource that will add another 30 social care places in the south of Fuerteventura. Work is also continuing to establish a centre in the Antigua-Betancuria area, alongside other resources due to open soon,” García added.
Lola García also highlighted the coordinated work by the Social Action and Procurement departments to put this important project out to tender.
Social Action Councillor Víctor Alonso said: “This facility and the services it will provide will go a long way towards meeting the need for day centres on Fuerteventura. The day centres currently operating—Josefina Pla in Corralejo and Puerto del Rosario—the future day centre for dependent older people in Gran Tarajal, which is already under construction, and this new centre, which is being put out to tender today, will help address the existing shortage of social care places and family respite services.”
Alonso said it was also important to note that “the Island Council’s Social Action Department has drawn up the 2026–2031 Social Care and Family Respite Infrastructure Plan, coordinated and planned with the island’s various Town Councils, whose cooperation and willingness to work together throughout the process should be acknowledged”.
“This facility, which will cost just over five million euros, is being funded from the Island Council’s own funds. It will provide a first-rate social care facility in the south of the island, offering essential services to people in the area who require care.”
Pájara Mayor Alejandro Jorge highlighted the coordination between administrations that made it possible for the Town Council to transfer the land, and thanked the Island Council for its efforts to make this resource a reality.
The facility will be built in the municipality of Pájara, on a plot in the Cañada del Río area. It will have capacity for 30 people, with a person-centred model of care. Individual support will be provided, along with services for families and groups.
The Costa Calma day centre for dependent older people will provide meals, personal care and cleaning, support to promote personal autonomy, health care and promotion, social and psychological support, transport, early reception and other forms of assistance for patients and their families.
The centre will include multi-purpose rooms, occupational therapy areas, therapy facilities, a nursing service, a multi-use area and offices for family support, among other facilities. Staff will include social workers, psychologists, physiotherapists, higher-level technicians in sociocultural activities, occupational therapists and care assistants for older people, as well as kitchen, cleaning and maintenance staff.
