Fuerteventura Island Council pays tribute to rural women at event in Betancuria
Fuerteventura Island Council, through its Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, has paid a well-deserved tribute to rural women from Fuerteventura at an event held at the Fuerteventura Archaeological Museum in Betancuria.
To mark Rural Women’s Day (15 October), the island council sought to give greater visibility to women in rural Fuerteventura by presenting awards to six women: Margot Robayna Alonso (Betancuria), María Jesús Rodríguez Vera (Puerto del Rosario), Alicia Martínez (Antigua), Asunción Alonso Viera (La Oliva), Teresa del Pino Hernández Ramos (Pájara) and Carmen Delia Suález Peña (Tuineje).
The awards were presented by Island Council President Lola García; Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Councillor Enrique Pérez; Antigua’s First Deputy Mayor Joana Verde; Director-General for Livestock Andrés Díaz Matoso; and councillors responsible for the area: Jonathan Peña (Tuineje), Rubén González (La Oliva), David de León (Puerto del Rosario) and José Díaz (Pájara).
Lola García said: “It is important to thank the many women who have devoted their lives to supporting their families, working the land and keeping our traditions alive—and to do so in a place so closely linked to our history as Betancuria. A history built through women’s daily work.”
There were also musical performances by Domingo Saavedra and Marey Martín, on piano and vocals respectively, as neighbours, friends and relatives of the women honoured gathered to show their support.
