Fuerteventura Island Council calls on the State to provide pledged funding for La Lajita wastewater treatment plant expansion and upgrades

Fuerteventura Island Council is calling on the State to provide the pledged funding needed to expand and upgrade the La Lajita wastewater treatment plant.

The project is needed to improve the water cycle, as well as the area’s sewage and wastewater treatment system. It is set to cost more than €5 million, of which €2.5 million is dependent on State funding.

For this reason, island councillor Adargoma Hernández is urging the Spanish Government to approve the earmarked grant for the Canary Islands Government, which would then pass the funding on to the Island Council. This would allow it to carry out one of the main projects planned by the Council under Fuerteventura’s Island Water Plan, bringing treatment capacity in the La Lajita area to 600 cubic metres a day.

The councillor made the point at today’s Canary Islands Water Round Table, attended by representatives of the Canary Islands Government, the other island councils and other administrations with relevant responsibilities. The meeting reviewed progress on projects of general interest in each river basin district.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of activating the Hydraulic Works Agreement between the autonomous community and the State. The agreement is essential to advancing projects of general interest in desalination, water reuse and other hydraulic works whose scale or public interest is determined by the Canary Islands Government.
