Herbania receives Centenary Gold Medal for its work in youth football and development
The club welcomes the recognition from the Federación Interinsular de Fútbol de Las Palmas, which is marking its 100th anniversary and has been granted the title of Real.
Club Deportivo Herbania has been awarded the Centenary Gold Medal by the Federación Interinsular de Fútbol de Las Palmas, the organisation’s highest honour.
The award, recognising its work in youth football and development, was presented on Sunday 13 September at the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, as part of events marking a century of provincial football.
For its centenary, the federation has chosen to pay tribute to the people, institutions and clubs that have shaped the growth of football in the province. The anniversary also coincides with the organisation being granted the title of Real, and taking the name Real Federación Interinsular de Fútbol de Las Palmas.
For Club Deportivo Herbania, being part of this tribute is a tremendous source of pride, particularly because it recognises the club’s youth setup, which has been at its heart since it became Fuerteventura’s first affiliated club in 1945.
Founded that year, Herbania has always been much more than a football team. It has been a home for young players, families, members and an entire fanbase that continues to get behind the club season after season. It is a home to which thousands of families have entrusted their children, and a fanbase that has stood by the club at every match: celebrating, suffering and growing alongside its colours. This multigenerational community, deeply connected to the island, is what has made the club great and explains what Herbania is today.
Club president Inma Díaz collected the award on behalf of the whole organisation. ‘This medal does not belong to the club; it belongs to everyone who has made Herbania what it is over the years,’ Díaz said. ‘It belongs to every boy and girl in our youth setup, every family that entrusts us with their children, our members and a fanbase that never leaves us on our own. Collecting it on their behalf is the greatest honour.’
Club Deportivo Herbania would like to thank the Real Federación Interinsular de Fútbol de Las Palmas for the recognition and extend its gratitude to everyone who supports the project day in, day out: every coach, member of the board, referee, player in every age group, club employee, family, member and supporter. Without them, this medal would not have been possible.
‘This medal does not belong to the club; it belongs to everyone who has made Herbania what it is over the years... It belongs to every boy and girl in our youth setup, every family that entrusts us with their children, our members and a fanbase that never leaves us on our own. Collecting it on their behalf is the greatest honour.’
Eighty years after its founding, Herbania receives this award with the same commitment it began with: continuing to build the club, develop young players and remain one of Fuerteventura’s leading sporting institutions.
Founded in 1945 as Fuerteventura’s first affiliated club, Club Deportivo Herbania is now a multidisciplinary sporting and social organisation. Its activities include senior and youth football, swimming — with the Travesía a Nado Isla de Lobos as its flagship event — Canarian bowls, sailing and a wide programme of educational, cultural and wellbeing activities for all ages.
