Fuerteventura General Hospital signs agreement with Fundación Canaria Pequeño Valiente
The agreement provides for support for hospitalised paediatric patients, their families and healthcare staff, as well as information and outreach initiatives at the hospital.
Fuerteventura General Hospital’s strategy to humanise care
Fuerteventura Health Services Management, part of the Health Department of the Canary Islands Government, has reached a collaboration agreement with Fundación Canaria Pequeño Valiente to provide support for paediatric patients, families and healthcare professionals at Fuerteventura General Hospital. The work forms part of the hospital’s strategy to humanise healthcare.
The agreement was signed by Fuerteventura General Hospital manager Alejandro Miguens and Fundación Canaria Pequeño Valiente president José Juan Jerez. It establishes a two-year framework for continued collaboration and provides for a range of initiatives, with a particular focus on paediatric care.
Also present at the meeting were Fuerteventura Health Area director Tomás Pérez, specialist care nursing director María Soledad Iglesias, hospital social worker María Dolores Fabelo and other members of the foundation.
Planned initiatives include social and educational activities on the paediatric ward, designed to make hospital stays easier for children receiving medical treatment from the oncology and haematology services, as well as for those with other conditions. The foundation will also take part in planning the hospital’s care-focused activities and help deliver training for healthcare professionals.
The agreement also includes a dedicated support programme for families living in Fuerteventura whose children need treatment outside the island. In these cases, the hospital’s social work service will refer families to Fundación Canaria Pequeño Valiente. When the Canary Islands Health Service’s staff consider it appropriate, the foundation will support the service with accommodation, psychosocial support and advice on the procedures and arrangements arising from the child’s medical care.
The collaboration will therefore enable a coordinated response to needs that may arise both during paediatric hospital stays in Fuerteventura and when children have to travel to other healthcare centres to continue their treatment.
The agreement also provides for a technical follow-up committee to coordinate the initiatives and oversee the collaboration between the two organisations.
In addition, the two organisations will hold at least one annual event or session to introduce the volunteer programme to care teams in the relevant departments at the hospital.
