Fuerteventura Island Council approves the 2026–2028 Strategic Heritage Grants Plan

The plenary session of Fuerteventura Island Council today approved the Strategic Plan for the Management of Public Heritage Grants 2026–2028, which provides for an investment of nearly €1,186,540 across the three annual instalments.

Fuerteventura Island Council President Lola García stressed the importance of safeguarding and promoting the Island’s cultural wealth and heritage, “which is the essence that makes us unique”.

Through this strategic plan, the Council’s Department of Cultural Heritage, led by Rayco León, is promoting a series of measures to ensure the conservation and appreciation of this shared legacy.

The plan is built around two strategic priorities. The first focuses on protection and conservation by encouraging work and investment in Fuerteventura’s cultural heritage. General grants awarded through a competitive process will be available to owners of properties designated as Assets of Cultural Interest (BIC), listed properties, or properties recognised as having cultural heritage value.

This priority also includes agreements with the Diocese of the Canary Islands worth €900,000 to fund the conservation and protection of movable and immovable church property, as well as research work in the convent precinct of Betancuria.

The second strategic priority focuses on promoting and disseminating heritage. It will support cultural heritage activities through competitive grants for associations organising cultural activities, as well as named grants for the associations Más Ruines que Caín, Asociación Juego del Palo Canario Maho and Asociación Cultural El Efequén.

Strategic Plan for New Technologies

The plenary session also approved an amendment to the Strategic Grants Plan of Fuerteventura Island Council’s Department of IT and New Technologies, headed by Carmen Alonso. The amendment provides for a €123,000 grant to the Fuerteventura Chamber of Commerce to develop the Business Incubator 4.0, which will include an Island Technological Innovation Area to drive innovation, digitalisation and business development in Fuerteventura.

Department head Carmen Alonso said that constant changes in new technologies, along with emerging trends in management and administration, require knowledge and skills to be continually updated. The amendment is therefore proposed to create a named grant for the Fuerteventura Chamber of Commerce.
