Fuerteventura Island Council approves funding to support the primary sector and the island’s business community

The plenary session of Fuerteventura Island Council today, 30 October, approved the allocation of more than €4 million in unspent funds to support Fuerteventura’s business community, the primary sector and other priorities for the island.

Of this amount, €250,000 will bolster employment support grants awarded by the Department of Economic Development, extending them to businesses across Fuerteventura and helping to improve employability.

A further €404,394.50 will go towards a collaboration agreement with the Las Palmas University Foundation (FULP) for professional placement programmes for university graduates and people with vocational qualifications at companies in Fuerteventura.

The Department of New Technologies is also allocating €45,211.94 to the OMOTENSHI association to fund the ‘FTV Gamer Fest’ project. All these projects form part of FDCAN Fuerteventura 2023–2027.

The Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries will provide a named grant to the Regulatory Council of the Queso Majorero Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), as well as €20,000 to each of Fuerteventura’s fishermen’s guilds for running costs.

A further €15,000 will support the development of a plan to locate and historically map Fuerteventura’s native crop varieties. This will be the first phase of a larger project to establish a seed bank run by Fuerteventura Island Council.

Funding has also been set aside to enable primary-sector professionals to attend events such as the 15th National Goat Forum and the World Cheese Awards 2026.

The Tourism Board is allocating €70,000 to promote the Kite Festival in La Oliva and to the Fuerteventura Chamber of Commerce for tourism promotion in national and international markets.

Friday’s plenary session began with a minute’s silence for the victims of the rail accident in Toledo, as a mark of respect and condolences to their families and loved ones.
