Fuerteventura’s PSOE urges political parties to debate ideas rather than fuel social polarisation and hurtful attacks.
The Socialist Party (PSOE) in Fuerteventura is calling on the island’s political parties to focus the election debate on putting forward ideas, rather than on visceral confrontation, denigrating opponents and polarising society.
Recent hurtful and unnecessary comments on social media in Fuerteventura compel us to denounce the destructive and dehumanising course taken by some political positions.
Like the rest of the country, Fuerteventura needs to conduct the election campaign with political fair play: more arguments and fewer recriminations. Fuerteventura needs to halt a social rift that is also apparent on our island and is widened by the noise on social media. Today, that rift divides us as “the two Spains” divided us a century ago.
Public statements carry particular weight during an election. Every word has a social impact, shapes opinions and influences how we perceive democratic debate, either enriching it or undermining it. Those who take part in public life must therefore act with a sense of responsibility commensurate with their influence on society.
Denigration and vicious attacks distract from the real problems affecting people. They offer no solutions. In social terms, they are unproductive.
Public representatives have a responsibility to help improve that reality, build trust and offer reasons for hope. Citizens should bear in mind that those who fuel polarisation, deepen divisions or use social emotions as a means of confrontation are not seeking the collective well-being.
Against this backdrop, Fuerteventura’s PSOE is urging all the island’s political parties to restore respect, moderation and a broader perspective to public debate. Political commitment is demonstrated by what is defended, but also by how it is defended.
