Canary Islands Health Service begins work on new functional plan and space programme for Fuerteventura General Hospital

Fuerteventura’s Health Services Directorate, which comes under the Department of Health, met this week with the hospital’s various departments and functional units to present the initial work plan and begin the analyses and technical visits needed to draw up the centre’s Functional Plan and Space Programme. Both documents are a key stage in defining the hospital’s future needs and progressing the new Island Health Infrastructure Master Plan, which will cover the next two decades.

The contract for this service was awarded on 15 September following an open procedure under the ordinary processing route. The contract was signed on 21 October with the successful bidder, an international consultancy specialising in healthcare facility planning, technology and health projects. It is worth €128,400, including IGIC, and has a four-month delivery period.

The project takes as its starting point the development of a hospital that, since opening in 1982 with a floor area of 14,000 square metres, has undergone four expansion phases and now covers 52,000 square metres. In 2026, the hospital serves a catchment population of more than 130,000, amid population growth and rising demand for care.

Against this backdrop, the study will assess whether the current layout of spaces, consultation rooms and care pathways meets present and future needs. The aim is to anticipate the hospital’s medium- and long-term requirements, identify potential mismatches in how care is organised and propose solutions to make more efficient use of its facilities.

The planning will also take into account the future opening of the Specialist Care Centre (CAE) in La Lajita, in the municipality of Pájara. The project provides for a floor area of more than 16,000 square metres to serve the population of southern Fuerteventura. Coordinating the two facilities will make it possible to consider a more suitable distribution of consultations and specialist services, taking into account the healthcare needs of different parts of the island.

Through this contract, the Health Services Directorate for the island’s Health Area aims to establish an orderly and realistic plan for healthcare infrastructure, adapted to changes in the population and demand for care. Professionals from different departments and functional units will take part in the process, and their contributions will be essential to identifying needs, reviewing care pathways and defining the spaces the hospital will require in the coming years.
