Enrique Pérez: “We will not table a motion of no confidence in Betancuria, but we will guarantee stability in the government”

AM-CC spokesperson in Betancuria Enrique Pérez has voiced concern about the direction the Betancuria Town Council is taking following the resignation of first deputy mayor Esperanza González Méndez. He also has Friday’s court appearance by the town’s mayor, Enrique Cerdeña, as a person under investigation for alleged continued abuse of office, misappropriation of public funds and workplace harassment in mind. Speaking to La Voz de Fuerteventura, he sought to reassure residents and stressed that “the stability of the government is guaranteed”.

Despite the political situation unfolding in recent days, Enrique Pérez says he is not surprised by the direction the Betancuria Town Council is taking. “We have been watching it happen, and denouncing it. The decisions being made are not the right ones, and they are also affecting members of the mayor’s own team.”

Speaking to La Voz de Fuerteventura, Pérez emphasised “the way the mayor governs and makes decisions. In the end, the bubble bursts,” he said.

In this context, Esperanza González Méndez is expected to resign from the Unidos Por Betancuria party in the coming hours, and the mayor is expected to move her to the non-attached group.

That scenario would leave the success of any possible motion of no confidence in the town in the councillor’s own hands, since the number of councillors in the government and opposition would be equal, at three each.

There will be no motion of no confidence

However, AM-CC spokesperson Enrique Pérez has ruled out this option entirely. “We will not table a motion of no confidence, but we will guarantee stability in the government,” he stressed.

Pérez, who is also a member of the Fuerteventura Island Council, recalled that his political group had already voted in favour of the budget last December, “because it was what was best for the municipality”. He said this would guide its political work during the year remaining before the next election.

Pérez also wanted to make clear that he “respects” and “regrets” Esperanza González’s decision, given the “good and important work” she had done overseeing the areas of Popular Festivities, Youth, Sport, New Technologies, Education, Twinning with other municipalities and Citizen Participation.

Finally, the AM-CC spokesperson expressed his “concern” about the image Betancuria is projecting these days, with the mayor due to appear before the Court of First Instance and Examining Court No. 3 in Puerto del Rosario tomorrow, Friday, as a person under investigation.

He will have to answer questions about alleged continued abuse of office, misappropriation of public funds and workplace harassment, after the court opened a preliminary investigation following a complaint filed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office. Elena Puchalt, the municipal secretary and comptroller, is also due to appear in court this Friday as a person under investigation.
