Interview with Ahmed Hassena, president of Fuerteventura’s Sahrawi community

Fuerteventura’s Sahrawi community has welcomed the approval by the Congress of Deputies this Thursday of a law opening the way for Sahrawis born in Western Sahara before 29 September 1977, and their descendants, to obtain Spanish citizenship. Ahmed Hassena, president of the Sahrawi community on the island, said the vote marked the start of correcting “a small injustice” after more than half a century. He estimates that around a thousand people in Fuerteventura could benefit from the measure.
