Fuerteventura under yellow warning for rain and possible thunderstorms this Wednesday
Fuerteventura is under a yellow warning for rain and possible thunderstorms this Wednesday.
Fuerteventura is facing unsettled weather this Wednesday, 21 October, with a yellow rain warning issued by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) in force until 18:00.
Locally heavy showers are possible, with up to 15 litres per square metre potentially falling in one hour. Thunderstorms may accompany the showers.
The warning covers the whole of Fuerteventura, although rainfall may be irregular, with significant differences between areas of the island.
Canary Islands issues pre-alert for rain
The Canary Islands Government, through its Directorate General for Emergencies, has updated its assessment of the weather situation and declared a pre-alert for rain across the archipelago from 07:30 this Wednesday.
The decision is based on information from AEMET and other available sources, under the Canary Islands Emergency Plan for Adverse Weather Events (PEFMA).
According to the emergency services, the arrival of a humid, unstable air mass will bring changeable weather, with irregularly distributed rainfall and heavy showers that may be accompanied by thunderstorms.
The regional authorities’ statement cites accumulations of 15 millimetres in one hour and 60 millimetres in 12 hours as benchmarks for the weather situation across the Canary Islands. This does not mean that those amounts are expected in Fuerteventura.
Further showers possible this afternoon
The forecast for Fuerteventura points to mostly cloudy skies, with showers and thunderstorms during the morning and the possibility of further rain in the afternoon.
Temperatures will remain relatively mild, between 18 and 22 degrees.
Unsettled conditions may persist in places on Thursday, although the forecast indicates more sunny spells and slightly higher temperatures.
Advice during rainfall
With locally heavy rain possible, people are advised to take extra care when travelling, especially on roads where water may accumulate, and to avoid crossing ravines and watercourses during periods of rainfall.
The authorities advise people to follow official warning updates and heed the instructions of the emergency services.
Weather conditions may change over the coming hours, so people are advised to check for updates from AEMET and the Canary Islands Government.
