Fuerteventura Protagonista launches its first community working groups in Antigua and Pájara

The Fuerteventura Protagonista project is continuing to promote community development across the island’s municipalities, creating opportunities for people to meet, share experiences and concerns, and recognise what they can achieve together.

The first information meetings, held in Antigua and Pájara, have introduced the project to residents of the two municipalities and highlighted interest in creating new opportunities to meet, collaborate and take part in community life.

The participation and willingness to meet shown at these first sessions provide a starting point for further progress. Beyond presenting a project, these spaces foster connections between residents, associations, professionals and public bodies, recognising the skills and resources in each municipality and the opportunities that emerge when they are brought together.

The project is led by the Fuerteventura Island Council, through its Department for Citizen Participation and Open Government, headed by Víctor Alonso, in collaboration with the General Foundation of the University of La Laguna (FGULL) and the island’s six town councils. The next step will be to establish the community working groups, designed as open spaces to share interests, identify needs and explore proposals for joint action in each municipality. Two further meetings have been scheduled: in Antigua, on 21 October at 18:00 at the Senior Citizens’ Centre; and in Pájara, on 30 October at 17:00 at the Youth Centre.

The meetings are open to anyone interested in contributing to life in their municipality, including residents taking part in an individual capacity, associations, groups, professionals and other local and public-sector stakeholders. There is no need to belong to an organisation or group to take part. Anyone can come along, share their knowledge or ideas, or simply meet others with whom they can pursue initiatives of common interest.

The proposal is based on a simple premise: every municipality has experiences, resources and people able to contribute to its development. The challenge is to create the conditions for them to meet, recognise one another and work together. The community groups are therefore presented as opportunities to connect people and initiatives, strengthen relationships and turn shared concerns into practical action.

Fuerteventura Protagonista is continuing to extend its work across the island’s six municipalities, with the aim of encouraging more accessible participation, strengthening collaboration between the territory’s different stakeholders and fostering more cohesive communities that share responsibility.
