Josele Prieto puts his talent to work for a good cause once again
The world’s best ham carver, who is based in Fuerteventura, will take part without charge in a festival raising funds for research into childhood cancer and rare diseases.
José Carlos Prieto Bautista, known as Josele, will once again show his charitable side beyond Fuerteventura. He will take part without charge in the sixth Ham Carvers’ Charity Festival, which will be held on Sunday 13 September in Alhaurín de la Torre, Málaga.
The event will begin at 11.30am at Parque Municipal de los Patos, near the Mirador de Bellavista, and admission will be free. All proceeds will go towards funding research into childhood cancer and rare diseases.
The Fuerteventura-based carver will travel from the Canary Islands to join the professionals giving their time to this new charity initiative. His participation was highlighted during the festival’s launch by Iluminada Regateiro, president of the Asociación Grupo Girasoles.
Josele Prieto was named the world’s best ham carver in 2023 and received the distinction again in 2026, awarded by Official World Record and World Record Luxury. His career has also been marked by regular involvement in charitable initiatives in Fuerteventura and elsewhere.
When he received his latest international award, he made clear how important this aspect of his work is to him. “For me, what really matters is being able to help people when they need it,” he told La Voz de Fuerteventura at the time.
“I do it from the heart, because I firmly believe that our work should also help contribute something positive to society,” he added.
Ham, music and a charity bar
The festival is organised by the Asociación Grupo Girasoles de Alhaurín de la Torre, with support from the Town Council and several businesses, and sponsored by Famadesa.
Alongside demonstrations and servings of sliced ham, the event will feature live music, prize draws and a charity bar serving food and drinks. Organisers hope to match the strong turnout at previous editions and set a new fundraising record.
María del Carmen Molina, Alhaurín de la Torre’s councillor for Social Affairs and Equality, said at the launch: “When a child has cancer, it affects not only them but their whole family, so we have to help everyone.”
Throughout the year, the Asociación Grupo Girasoles runs various fundraising activities to support research and families. It also operates a charity clothing store and a shop selling home décor and gifts at its premises on Avenida de San Sebastián.
By taking part in this sixth edition, Josele Prieto is once again bringing Fuerteventura’s name to an initiative that puts his renowned professional skill at the service of those most in need of support.
