Gran Tarajal care home construction progresses, with completion expected in the first quarter of 2027

The Fuerteventura Island Council is continuing work on the new social and healthcare residence in Gran Tarajal, a facility intended to expand care provision for older people and those with support needs on the island.

Work began in early 2026 and is scheduled to take twelve months. The Island Council says construction is progressing as planned, with completion scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.

The project has an initial budget of €15.3 million and will add 90 social and healthcare places, as well as 12 respite care places for families.

Two services in the Valle del Aceitún

The complex is being built on a 4,701-square-metre plot in the Valle del Aceitún, in Gran Tarajal, and will house two separate services.

One will be a residential care home for 60 people, providing care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

It will also include a day care centre for older people with support needs, with a further 30 places, in addition to the 12 family respite places planned for the project.

Fuerteventura Island Council President Lola García says expanding social and healthcare provision is one of the Council’s priorities.

“People are at the heart of the Island Council’s policies, and the number of places is set to rise to 442 in 2026 across the institution’s various services,” she says.

New social and healthcare services on the island

The Gran Tarajal residence is one of the projects being developed by the Island Council to increase Fuerteventura’s social and healthcare capacity.

Other projects include opening a day centre for older people in Costa Calma, which will add 30 places, as well as planned services for the Antigua-Betancuria area and other facilities due to open soon.

The Island Council’s Social Action councillor, Víctor Alonso, says the new residence will help meet existing demand on the island.

“This facility will respond to the high demand for social and healthcare places in Fuerteventura. Work is progressing well, as part of the Island Council’s commitment to a model of care that is more centred on the individual,” he says.

Tuineje Mayor David Herrera welcomed progress on a facility he considers especially important for the municipality and highlighted the coordination between the different administrations that has made its construction possible.

The Gran Tarajal social and healthcare residence is co-funded by Fuerteventura Island Council and resources from the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), channelled through the Ministry and the Canary Islands Government.
