Manuel Miranda hands over ten TETRA radios to Tuineje to strengthen emergency coordination.

Manuel Miranda, the Canary Islands Government’s Minister for Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion and Water, today handed over ten TETRA communications devices to Tuineje Town Council through the Directorate General for Emergencies. The aim is to strengthen the response capacity of municipal Civil Protection services and improve coordination in any emergency.

The event, held at the Civil Protection headquarters in Gran Tarajal, was also attended by Tuineje Mayor David Herrera, Fuerteventura Island Council’s Councillor for Security and Emergencies Lolina Negrín, representatives of the municipality’s Civil Protection group, and Rosa María Dodero Rodríguez, the island liaison for the Emergency Support Unit.

The handover is part of the Canary Islands Government’s strategy to consolidate the Canary Islands Security and Emergency Network (RESCAN) as the reference public communications network for all civil protection and emergency services across the archipelago.

The new TETRA terminals will give Tuineje Civil Protection access to a secure, robust communications system specifically designed for emergency management, ensuring communications remain available even when conventional networks are affected.

At the event, Manuel Miranda said: “Public safety depends to a great extent on those responding to an emergency being able to communicate quickly, effectively and without interruption. With this handover, we are continuing to expand a network that connects all levels of government and will give the Canary Islands an increasingly robust and efficient coordination system.”

The minister added that expanding RESCAN was “a strategic commitment by the Canary Islands Government to ensure that all emergency services speak the same language and work on a single communications network, improving coordination and response capacity anywhere in the archipelago”.

Tuineje Mayor David Herrera thanked the Canary Islands Government for providing the equipment, which “adds resources to the Civil Protection reinforcement programme that this municipal government has been developing for some time”. “New risks must be tackled with the most up-to-date resources and, above all, with close coordination between the different parties involved in emergency management,” he added. “That is why,” he concluded, “better communications are always good news for strengthening the municipality’s civil protection system.”

Fuerteventura Island Council’s Councillor for Security and Emergencies, Lolina Negrín, thanked the Canary Islands Government “for this initiative, which puts innovation at the service of the public and helps strengthen the response capacity in emergencies, when communication between units is crucial to saving lives”.

The transfer of this equipment is part of the expansion of RESCAN, the Canary Islands Government’s communications network for civil protection and emergencies, which brings together other public administrations and partner organisations. The infrastructure is intended to become the main emergency coordination network in the Canary Islands. It also ensures direct communication with CECOES 1-1-2, even when conventional systems are compromised.

The Directorate General for Emergencies is continuing to roll out this programme of TETRA terminal transfers, aimed particularly at municipalities, to strengthen interoperability between administrations and further improve the response to emergencies across the archipelago.
