Four candidates for the Senate in Fuerteventura

Asamblea Majorera-Coalición Canaria (AM-CC) has selected Nuria Cabrera as its candidate for the Senate, a decision unanimously ratified by the party’s island bodies. The nationalist party hopes to regain representation for Fuerteventura in the upper house after twenty years without holding the seat.

The PSOE is backing Paloma Hernández in a bid to retain the seat currently held by its senator.

The People’s Party (PP) is standing Esther Hernández, former mayor of Tuineje. Her candidacy follows an electoral agreement between the PP and Vox, under which Santiago Abascal’s party has agreed not to put forward its own Senate candidates in the Canary Islands.

Negotiations between the two parties had raised questions about whether there might be changes to the Fuerteventura candidacy. However, the PP’s island leadership consistently backed Esther Hernández as its candidate for the upper house.

The fourth candidate is Rubén Reyes Gutiérrez, standing for Asambleas Municipales de Fuerteventura (AMF) for mayor of Puerto del Rosario in the forthcoming municipal elections.

His selection comes as part of AMF’s alliance with Juntos por Pájara and Nueva Canarias. Nueva Canarias, in turn, is contesting the general election under the Unidad del Pueblo Canario banner, a coalition comprising Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista, Podemos, Movimiento Sumar and Izquierda Unida.

Fuerteventura candidates for Congress

Fuerteventura will also be represented among the candidates standing for the Congress of Deputies in the province of Las Palmas.

La Oliva Town Council’s finance councillor, Juan José Rodríguez, will take third place on the Primero Canarias-Coalición Canaria coalition list.

The list will be headed by Teodoro Sosa, followed by María Fernández. It follows an electoral agreement between Coalición Canaria, Primero Canarias and several municipalist groups across the archipelago.

The PSOE list for Congress in Las Palmas will be headed by Dolores Corujo, followed by Luc André Diouf, Vanesa Cabrera and Fuerteventura native Pedro Sosa, who will be fourth.

The PP has put Sergio Ramos at the top of its list, followed by María Teresa Ortega, Guillermo Mariscal and Clara Peña, a PP councillor on Puerto del Rosario Town Council, in fourth place.

Unidad del Pueblo Canario is headed by Luis Campos, secretary-general of Nueva Canarias, with Podemos’ Iratxe Serrano in second place. The list represents the electoral alliance of the four organisations in the coalition.

Vox has put MP Alberto Rodríguez at the top of its list for Congress in Las Palmas, while Drago Canarias is standing separately, with Héctor Morán heading its provincial list.

Fuerteventura will elect one senator and vote for MPs representing Las Palmas

At the general election on 29 November, voters in Fuerteventura will be able to elect their representative in the Senate directly. The island is a constituency in its own right for the upper house and has one seat.

For the Congress of Deputies, by contrast, Fuerteventura shares a constituency with Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. Its voters will therefore take part in electing the eight MPs for the province of Las Palmas.

The registered candidates set the stage for a new election in which voters will decide who represents Fuerteventura directly in the Senate and how much representation candidates from the island will have in the provincial Congress delegation.
