Man remanded in custody without bail over death of 23-year-old in Gran Tarajal

A judge has ordered the 30-year-old man arrested on suspicion of fatally stabbing a 23-year-old in a public place in Gran Tarajal, in the municipality of Tuineje, last Wednesday to be remanded in custody without bail.

The suspect appeared before a judge on Saturday, 15 August, and exercised his right not to give evidence. The judge overseeing the case then ordered him to be remanded in custody as the investigation into a suspected homicide continues, according to information provided by the Canary Islands High Court of Justice (TSJC).

A fight between two men

The incident took place on the night of Wednesday, 12 August, in Gran Tarajal. According to information provided by the Civil Guard, the knife attack happened during a fight between two men, in which the 23-year-old was stabbed in the neck.

The Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) 112 received the call at 20:49. When medical teams arrived, the victim was in cardiac arrest.

Paramedics from the Canary Islands Emergency Service carried out resuscitation and managed to restart his heart. Once stabilised, the young man was taken to Fuerteventura General Hospital in a critical condition.

He died hours later in hospital

Despite the medical team’s efforts, the young man succumbed to his injuries and died in the hospital in the early hours of Thursday, 13 August.

The Civil Guard launched an operation to locate the suspected attacker as soon as the incident was reported. The suspect, a 30-year-old man, was eventually arrested on Thursday morning, a few hours after the victim’s death.

After being held at police premises while the relevant proceedings were prepared, the man appeared before a judge on Saturday.

The case is now proceeding through the courts, with the man under investigation on suspicion of homicide and remanded in custody without bail.
