Puerto del Rosario to maintain 18.55% reduction in waste collection charge in 2027
55% reduction in the waste collection charge already in force this year. The proposal also includes raising the discount from 30% to 50% for businesses that hire specialist contractors to collect certain types of waste.
Puerto del Rosario Town Council has begun amending the tax bylaw governing the charge for the collection of urban solid waste, with the aim of keeping the reduced rates in place from 1 January 2027. The rates are currently being applied during this financial year.
The proposal, presented to the ordinary council meeting held on Monday, 26 October, would extend the 18.55% reduction approved on 27 July and prevent the rates from reverting to their previous levels at the start of the year.
The amendment is based on the financial report on the municipal waste collection service, which sets out the costs and provides a reference for adjusting the rates.
Puerto del Rosario Mayor David de Vera said: “This amendment will allow us to maintain throughout 2027 the rates that are already being applied this year.”
He said the aim was to “bring the bylaw into line with the service’s financial data and set the conditions that will apply to residents and businesses from the next financial year”.
Higher discounts for certain businesses
The council proposal also changes the discounts available to businesses that use specialist companies to manage certain types of waste.
Specifically, the reduction in the charge will rise from 30% to 50% for businesses that have contracted waste managers to collect materials such as oils, metals, paint, wood or cardboard directly from their premises.
Economy and Finance Councillor Juan Manuel Verdugo said: “The proposal incorporates the rates calculated in the financial report and changes the discount for businesses that hire specialist waste managers, increasing it from 30% to 50% of the applicable charge.”
The amendment also provides for adjustments to certain floor-area bands for commercial premises, so that the charge calculation better reflects the estimated amount of waste they generate.
Expected to come into force in January 2027
The amendment still has to complete the relevant administrative steps, including final approval and subsequent publication in the Official Gazette of Las Palmas Province.
The Town Council expects the new provisions to come into force on 1 January 2027, once the legally prescribed procedure has been completed.
The council therefore aims to maintain the reduced waste collection charges next year and expand incentives for certain businesses with specialist waste collection systems.
