Antigua taxi drivers thank Mayor Juan Cabrera for restricting the urban fare zone

The measure was not achieved under the previous mayor, Matías Peña, “because he never saw it as a solution that could help this sector survive”, says Francisco Vera, president of one of Antigua’s two taxi associations, in a press release sent by the Town Council.

Francisco Vera says that “the situation had been blocked for years, causing serious harm to the sector, and this administration has managed to resolve it in its first hundred days”.

The president of the Caleta de Fuste Taxi Association, Francisco Vera, said he was pleased after securing the green light for the urban fare zone restriction, which is very inexpensive. The Mayor of Antigua noted that this was a commitment made by the administration as soon as it took office, and that “we have achieved it in our first hundred days”.

“Thanks to the current administration, led by Mayor Juan Cabrera and Transport Councillor Agustín Rodríguez, a situation that had been suffocating us for 13 years has been unblocked. The municipality of Antigua can now be brought into line with the rest of the island through Fare 3. This was not achieved under the previous mayor, because he never saw it as a solution that could help this sector survive,” Francisco Vera explained.

“While the Canary Islands Government decides whether to approve the increase to Fare 1, the urban fare, which is currently being processed following an appeal, a solution was needed. The answer was to restrict it to Antigua’s town centre and apply Fare 3 to the rest of the municipality. We are now in a good position,” he added.

Transport Councillor Agustín Rodríguez said the council was making itself available to the sector to address its needs, such as extending the taxi rank on El Castillo’s main avenue.
