Tenerife and Fuerteventura host round tables on journalism and gender-based violence
The events, taking place on 30 October and 13 November, will explore issues at the intersection of journalism, gender and communication.
The Equality Training Plan under the Aliadas Programme, organised by the Directorate General for Youth of the Canary Islands Government, has announced two events under the title “Journalism and Equal Communication: Tackling Gender-Based Violence Through Communication”. The sessions form part of the “Combating Gender-Based Violence” round-table series. Both events are free to attend and will be chaired by Idaira Martín Martínez, a journalist specialising in Gender Studies.
Round Table I will take place on Friday 30 October, from 17:00 to 18:30. The in-person event will be held at the Atlantic Youth Centre, at number 17 Wenseslao Yanes González Street, in La Laguna (Tenerife). The invited speakers for this first session are journalists Nayra Bajo de Vera, Jennifer Jiménez and Silvia Pérez Alberto.
Round Table II will be held on Friday 13 November, at the same time, from 17:00 to 18:30. This event will take place at the Fuerteventura Island Youth Centre, at number 1 Dr Fleming Street, in Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura). The speakers confirmed for the second round table are journalists Ngone Ndiaye, Andrea Domínguez and Natalia G. Vargas.
Under the slogan “building equality through communication”, the sessions are designed as training spaces to help participants communicate with a gender perspective and report on gender-based violence in strict accordance with the profession’s codes of ethics. The events are open to everyone, with a particular focus on journalism students and media professionals seeking to improve their coverage of this issue.
The events are supported by the Government of Spain, through the Ministry of Equality and the State Pact against Gender-Based Violence, and by the Canary Islands Government.
