Lifeguard rescues young man with symptoms of drowning at Grandes Playas

A lifeguard rescued an 18-year-old man from the sea on Thursday after he showed symptoms of drowning at Grandes Playas, in the municipality of La Oliva, the Canary Islands Government’s Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) 112 reported.

The incident took place at 14:22. At that time, 112 received an alert from the lifeguard, who said he had pulled the young man from the water and that he was showing symptoms of drowning.

After gathering information from those who raised the alarm, the medical coordinator of the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) dispatched a basic life support ambulance.

On arrival, medical staff treated the young man, who had already received initial assistance from the lifeguard. He had moderate symptoms of drowning, barring complications, and was taken by ambulance to Fuerteventura General Hospital.

Local Police officers also went to Grandes Playas and assisted the emergency response deployed in the area.
