Surfer seriously injured in accident at Piedra Playa

A 47-year-old Polish surfer was taken in a serious condition to Fuerteventura General Hospital after an accident at Piedra Playa, in the municipality of La Oliva, this Wednesday, 30 September.

The incident occurred at around 4.37pm, when the Canary Islands Government’s Emergency and Security Coordinating Centre (CECOES) 112 received an alert reporting that beach rescue staff had pulled a surfer from the water showing signs of having nearly drowned.

CECOES 112 immediately activated the emergency services. An advanced life support ambulance and two basic life support ambulances from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) were sent to the scene, along with a doctor and a nurse from Corralejo Health Centre.

On arrival, medical staff treated the man and found that he had signs of having nearly drowned and a serious back injury.

After being stabilised at the scene, he was taken to Fuerteventura General Hospital in an SUC advanced life support ambulance.

The response also involved personnel from La Oliva Fire and Rescue Service and the beach rescue service. Firefighters assisted the emergency teams sent to the area.

The Guardia Civil handled the relevant procedures.
