Women’s tournament at Los Pozos to honour Carlos Romero
The first Carlos Romero Women’s Football Memorial will bring together CD Peña de La Amistad, CD Caday Fuerteventura and Inter Playa Honda on 6 September.
The Fuerteventura Island Council hosted the presentation on Wednesday of the first Carlos Romero Women’s Football Memorial, a new sporting event organised by CD Peña de La Amistad to pay tribute to a former member of its board and a person closely connected with sport and Fuerteventura’s social life.
The tournament will take place on Sunday 6 September, from 11.30am, at Los Pozos Municipal Stadium, with CD Peña de La Amistad, CD Caday Fuerteventura and Inter Playa Honda taking part. The event is supported by the Fuerteventura Island Council, Puerto del Rosario Town Council and the Canary Islands Government.
Fuerteventura Island Council president Lola García said: “Women’s football in Fuerteventura is shining brighter than ever, and it will do so this Sunday at a memorial that is very important for CD Peña de La Amistad, but also for the Island Council, Puerto del Rosario and Fuerteventura, because it honours the work Carlos Romero did for the people of Fuerteventura.”
Representing the Canary Islands Government, Manuel Miranda, the regional minister for Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion and Water, praised “women’s football in Fuerteventura, where CD Peña de La Amistad is a leading club, and a tournament that remembers Carlos Romero, a person committed to society”.
Puerto del Rosario mayor David de Vera recognised the efforts of CD Peña de La Amistad and everyone involved in making the memorial a reality. Island Council sports councillor Luis González congratulated the club on the idea, saying: “Sport serves as a social tool, in this case by remembering an essential role model in social life and at CD Peña de La Amistad.”
The presentation was also attended by other representatives of CD Peña de La Amistad, the club’s women’s team coach Fátima Rodríguez, members of Carlos Romero’s family, and Caday sporting director Raúl Figueroa.
A tribute to Carlos Romero
The memorial is being held in tribute to Carlos Romero, who was closely associated with Club Deportivo Peña de La Amistad and had a long record of commitment to sport and Fuerteventura’s community.
Romero, who died last year, served on the club’s board for many years and played an active part in its development.
His involvement with La Peña de La Amistad was also part of the story of a club with more than 50 years of history. Since its foundation in 1972, it has played an important role in promoting sport and providing a place for social gatherings in Puerto del Rosario, with a particular focus on grassroots sport.
Carlos Romero was also a prominent figure in Fuerteventura’s social services sector. He was the Island Council’s first social worker, joining the institution in 1985, and built a long career defending social rights and promoting people’s well-being. In 2024, the Island Council and the Las Palmas Official College of Social Work unveiled a plaque in his honour at the Island Youth Centre, recognising his professional and personal contribution.
Three teams put women’s football in the spotlight
The first memorial will bring together CD Peña de La Amistad, one of the leading names in women’s football in Fuerteventura, CD Caday Fuerteventura and Inter Playa Honda. The tournament is designed as an opportunity to meet and promote women’s football.
The memorial also comes at a time of particular momentum for the sport in Fuerteventura, with women’s teams growing and women taking a greater role across the different sporting categories and structures on the island.
