Victor Alonso: “Fuerteventura will need another term of office to catch up with the capital islands in social care and healthcare resources”
”.
Fuerteventura Island Council’s Social Welfare Councillor, Víctor Alonso, has defended the progress made during the current term in supporting people. The Island Council expects to end the term with 442 places for people requiring dependency care, up from 332 at the start. It is also considering a 2026–2031 Social Care Infrastructure and Family Respite Plan, which includes new day centres, care homes, services for people with disabilities and 13 supported homes across Fuerteventura. Alonso acknowledged, however, that demand remains high. He put the number of people on waiting lists for the various dependency services at around 800 and estimated that between 600 and 700 are waiting for services to promote personal autonomy. In this area, he defended the social care commissioning arrangement promoted by the Island Council, which is currently subject to legal proceedings, and said that the service provider awarded the contract, Mundo Nuevo, is currently accredited. He stressed that there is strong demand across the island for expanded services. He also noted that the Island Council has secured funding for the third sector through to the end of 2027.
