Joy and excitement at the opening of the III Neuro Majo in El Castillo

El Castillo, in Antigua, hosted the opening of the third Neuro Majo to the rhythm of a batucada and amid great excitement. Antigua hosted an opening ceremony on Friday filled with music, colour and the joy of participants in the third edition of Neuro Majo 2026/2027.

The event, held at the Elba Carlota hotel in El Castillo, brought together older people from Fuerteventura’s six municipalities, institutional representatives and the organisers of these Canarian Olympics. The day also brought a special announcement for participants from Antigua: a Mediterranean cruise next November.

Antigua Mayor Juan Cabrera made the announcement in his address to those attending. “Antigua has already won,” he declared, before announcing the trip, which the Town Council wants to offer in recognition of the contribution and achievements of its older residents.

“They will enjoy a Mediterranean cruise in November because they deserve it. They have worked for the future of our town and defend our culture and traditions with wisdom,” the mayor said.

The opening of the third Neuro Majo was accompanied by a batucada, flags, music and a festive display, with the older participants themselves at its heart.

Sofía Alves, the councillor responsible for the department in Antigua, thanked participants for the experiences they had shared through the initiative. “My heart is full of gratitude,” she said, highlighting the laughter, moments of understanding and stories that had emerged as the teams prepared.

Alves also praised Esmeralda, who trains both teams from Antigua, for her commitment and dedication to the participants.

A celebration representing all of Fuerteventura

The event brought together older people from all six municipalities of Fuerteventura, accompanied by their mayors and institutional representatives. Those attending included Fuerteventura Island Council president Lola García and island councillor for Social Services Víctor Alonso.

The event marked the start of a new edition of Neuro Majo, an initiative that brings older people from different municipalities together for shared activities and challenges, encouraging social interaction, participation and active ageing.

The event’s creators were also at the opening and said they were preparing new challenges for the next edition.

“Fuerteventura is the island that has embraced and supported the Canarian Olympics for older people more than any other,” the organisers said, highlighting the initiative’s reception on the island.

The third edition of Neuro Majo thus begins with older people at the centre of an event that has brought together participants from across Fuerteventura and will continue throughout the 2026/2027 season.
