AM-CC La Oliva calls on the PP to show consistency and drive the regional school heat plan through Education

Asamblea Majorera - Coalición Canaria La Oliva is calling on the local Partido Popular to show “consistency and responsibility” after it blamed the Town Council for the situation caused by high temperatures in classrooms. The Canary Islands Government has had a Plan to Adapt Educational Centres to High Temperatures since 2024, promoted by its departments of Education and Ecological Transition, both managed by the PP, but it has not implemented it.

AM-CC La Oliva points out that the plan was presented by regional ministers Poli Suárez and Mariano Hernández Zapata with an initial allocation of more than €30 million. Among other measures, it provides for installing fans and cooling systems, creating shaded areas, improving ventilation and naturalising educational centres.

“It is difficult to understand why the PP in La Oliva is now asking the Town Council to take measures that are part of a plan designed, budgeted for and publicly presented by the very departments its party manages in the Canary Islands Government,” the nationalist organisation said.

AM-CC La Oliva also notes that the Education Department itself has ordered all educational centres in Fuerteventura to switch to online learning this Tuesday, 15 September, because of the high temperatures, applying the regional protocol for such situations.

For the nationalists, this demonstrates the need to address climate adaptation at educational centres through coordinated planning between administrations and on the basis of technical criteria, rather than using an exceptional situation to create political confrontation in the municipality.

The Town Council will continue to meet its responsibilities

Asamblea Majorera - Coalición Canaria says La Oliva Town Council will continue carrying out the conservation, maintenance and improvement work at schools that falls to local administration, as it has been doing.

The Town Council is making ongoing investments in maintaining the municipality’s educational centres and has carried out repairs, painting, refurbishment and improvement work at school facilities. It has also included specific funding for school maintenance and support in the 2026 municipal budget.

However, adapting educational infrastructure to rising temperatures also requires action and planning from the Canary Islands Government’s Education Department, which is responsible for infrastructure and equipment and has a dedicated plan specifically designed to address this problem.

AM-CC La Oliva says that if the Partido Popular believes the municipality’s schools need further cooling measures, “the logical thing would be to convey that same urgency to its own officials in the Education Department and help ensure that the measures set out in the regional plan are also implemented in La Oliva”.
