Asamblea Majorera marks 50 years with music, cultural activities and a strong sense of identity
C. Más Ruines que Caín will also feature, with surprises planned to mark half a century of the organisation’s history.
Asamblea Majorera – Coalición Canaria Fuerteventura will hold an event to mark 50 years of its history under the slogan ‘The voice that changed Fuerteventura’. It will take place next Saturday, 24 October, at 7pm at the emblematic Terrero de Lucha de Tetir.
The event will look back over half a century of history, the changes the island has experienced and the music that has soundtracked the organisation’s journey over those five decades. Performers will include Luis Morera, Olga Cerpa and Mestisay, Althay Páez, Gara Alemán and A.C. Más Ruines que Caín, as well as dance pairs from various folk groups on the island.
The event was presented today at the organisation’s island headquarters, with contributions from Asamblea Majorera general coordinator Mario Cabrera and event producer Israel Reyes.
Both were accompanied by representatives of the party, including island president Lola García, Senate candidate Nuria Cabrera and Juan José Rodríguez, the third candidate on the list for the Congress of Deputies.
Mario Cabrera said the gathering was intended as a particularly commemorative event and formed part of the programme of activities Asamblea Majorera has been organising throughout the year to remember and highlight the organisation’s historical importance. The programme will continue until March 2027, when the organisation will mark 50 years since its founding.
Cabrera said the event would pay tribute to the men and women who organised themselves half a century ago and were able to change Fuerteventura’s history and give a voice to a people who were oppressed and forgotten.
He added that the organisation had always had deep ties to culture and had often acted as a cultural action group. ‘That is why we wanted to hold an event closely connected to our identity and our culture, with music taking centre stage.’
Event producer Israel Reyes praised the event’s considerable artistic line-up and stressed that it was not just about telling the story of Asamblea Majorera, but about ‘sharing and celebrating Fuerteventura’s history through music’, he said.
Reyes explained that the event would be structured in three parts, using musical performances to portray the past, the present and the future.
The event has also been organised with the help of Manuel González, composer, producer, Canary Islands artist and founder of Mestisay, who was unable to attend the presentation for personal and scheduling reasons.
Finally, island president Lola García urged everyone on the island to take part in ‘a tribute to those who one day dared to fight for and defend the island they loved so much, and whose path we continue to follow’.
