Contigo Tuineje proposes municipal campaign to promote local shopping at Christmas

Contigo Tuineje has formally submitted a proposal to Tuineje Town Council’s governing group to launch an institutional campaign encouraging people to shop at businesses in the municipality and buy local products during the upcoming Christmas season.

The initiative, called “I Buy Products from Tuineje”, aims to boost economic activity among local shops, restaurants and the primary sector, while encouraging residents to shop in the municipality and attracting consumers from elsewhere in Fuerteventura.

The political group believes the campaign should begin immediately to make the most of the increase in commercial activity around Christmas and be coordinated with the fifth edition of the island-wide programme “Yo Compro en Fuerteventura – Bono Consumo 2026” (“I Shop in Fuerteventura – Consumer Vouchers 2026”), with voucher sales due to start on 10 November.

Promoting businesses in Gran Tarajal, Tuineje and across the municipality

The proposal would raise the profile of shops and restaurants in Gran Tarajal, Tuineje town centre and the municipality’s various villages, highlighting the range of goods and services on offer and their convenience.

Contigo Tuineje argues that an institutional campaign would increase awareness of local businesses and help ensure that more household spending stays in the municipality.

“Shopping in Tuineje means investing in the future of our families and neighbours. We want the Town Council to lead a strategy that makes people aware that every euro spent in a local shop multiplies the wellbeing of the whole municipality,” the organisation said.

Local produce at the heart of the initiative

One of the proposal’s aims is to give a prominent role to the primary sector and to products made or grown in the municipality.

The political group proposes promoting locally sourced cheese, meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, and supporting their sale through local businesses, direct-sales channels and municipal markets.

The initiative would therefore extend beyond traditional shops selling clothes, footwear or gifts, bringing agricultural, livestock and fishing producers into a joint economic promotion strategy.

A campaign featuring digital promotion, business signs and street events

Contigo Tuineje’s proposal is built around three strands of action.

The first is a communications and digital promotion campaign, using videos and other audiovisual content to tell the stories of the municipality’s small business owners, shopkeepers and producers.

The second is to identify participating businesses with distinctive signs and posters, making it easier for consumers to recognise participating businesses and locally sourced products.

Finally, the political group proposes organising cultural events, live music and activities for children in open-air shopping areas on the busiest weekends.

These measures would aim to draw people to commercial areas, bring life to the streets and encourage shopping, including by making use of the island-wide consumer vouchers at businesses participating in that programme.

Contigo Tuineje calls on the Town Council to act quickly

The political group has told the municipal governing team that it is willing to help design and deliver the campaign, with the aim of launching it before the busiest period for Christmas shopping.

Contigo Tuineje believes the Town Council should act quickly so that small and medium-sized businesses, restaurants and producers in the municipality can benefit from promotional activities from the start of the campaign.

For now, “I Buy Products from Tuineje” is a proposal submitted by the political group to the municipal government. Whether it goes ahead will depend on the Town Council’s response and the decisions made about its possible implementation.
