Fuerteventura Island Council awards Lajares road works for almost €4 million

Following collaboration between the island institution and La Oliva Town Council, Fuerteventura Island Council has awarded the contract for works on the Lajares road stretch for almost €4 million. The strategic project will improve the layout and accessibility of this section of the FV-109 as it passes through the village of Lajares, in the municipality of La Oliva.

On Wednesday, Fuerteventura Island Council president Lola García and La Oliva mayor Isaí Blanco took another step towards advancing the project by signing the preliminary expropriation documents required for the works. The signing reflects the cooperation between the two administrations in facilitating a project that will improve safety, accessibility and conditions along this section of the road.

Island president Lola García highlighted the importance of improving the island’s road network, “because it directly improves the quality of life of people in Fuerteventura”. García also stressed the value of working with local councils to deliver these road infrastructure improvements, as well as work on tracks and unpaved roads. In this case, La Oliva Town Council is coordinating efforts to improve accessibility and safety on a stretch that has seen a sharp increase in traffic and pedestrian use.

La Oliva mayor Isaí Blanco reaffirmed the Town Council’s commitment to projects that improve the safety and accessibility of road infrastructure and respond to residents’ demands.

The project, promoted by the Department of Roads, headed by Blas Acosta, has been awarded to Obras Públicas Canarias S.L. The work, which is due to take ten months, will regenerate the town’s urban area.

The project will improve pedestrian access by adding new pavements and the infrastructure needed to install traffic lights. New lighting will also improve illumination in the area. Another key element is the removal of architectural barriers, with adapted kerb ramps, pedestrian crossings and other features. The project also includes the development of the sewerage network.

The works will cover an area of 25,600.00 m², including the carriageway, paved pavements and planting areas. They will take place on Calle Coronel González del Hierro, between kilometre points 3+940 and 5+050.
