Canary Islands Government tenders €14.2 million expansion of Puerto del Rosario wastewater treatment plant

The Department of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion and Water of the Canary Islands Government today published a tender on the Public Sector Procurement Platform for works to expand the wastewater treatment plant (EDAR) in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura, with a budget of €14,195,880.99.

The updated project covers the expansion of the Puerto del Rosario plant, which treats the municipality’s wastewater and subsequently regenerates some of the treated water.

The contract is being awarded through an open procedure under the ordinary processing procedure. The deadline for bids is 9 November, and the works are expected to take 20 months.

The project will double the plant’s treatment capacity, from approximately 3,000 cubic metres a day to 6,000 cubic metres a day. The works include expanding the treatment lines and equipment, as well as building new facilities to process the sludge generated during wastewater treatment.

Planned improvements include advanced biological treatment processes to improve the quality of the treated water and make the process more stable when flow rates vary. The removal of solids and sand will also be optimised, and new facilities will enable more effective sludge dewatering.

This will reduce the volume of waste generated and make it easier to manage, while also reducing the environmental impact associated with its transport and treatment.

The water produced will be of a quality suitable for reuse in irrigation in the primary sector and green spaces, among other uses. The availability of reclaimed water will help ease pressure on conventional water resources and free up supplies for other uses, such as providing water to the population.

The project also includes measures to reduce discharges into the sea and improve their conditions, as well as strengthen the plant’s environmental integration. It is located in the Risco Prieto industrial area.
