La Oliva People’s Party calls for a more dynamic market to make it a showcase for local produce

La Oliva Market brings together locally produced goods, crafts and offerings linked to the municipality’s identity at a unique venue: the historic Casa de El Coronel. The People’s Party (PP) in La Oliva says these features give the market potential that is not currently being fully realised. It is therefore calling on the municipal government, formed by CC-AM, PSOE and Nueva Canarias (NC), to make a firm commitment to promoting and invigorating it.

The market is open every Tuesday and Friday from 9:00 to 14:00, with stalls run by producers and craftspeople. José Vicente Calero, the PP’s municipal spokesperson, believes there is scope to raise its profile among both local residents and visitors to the municipality.

“We have a venue offering local produce, crafts and a strong sense of identity that deserves far more promotion. It is also housed in a historic building such as Casa de El Coronel, so it has all the ingredients to become a landmark in La Oliva,” he said.

More activities to attract residents and visitors

The PP’s proposal is to go beyond the venue’s regular opening hours and introduce a programme of events to generate more activity around the market.

Ideas include food events, themed days, cultural activities, initiatives to promote local produce and targeted publicity campaigns.

“We can’t just open the doors. We need to work to bring people in, encourage them to take part, show them what is on offer here and give them reasons to come back,” Calero said. He argues that more activity would also create new opportunities for the producers, craftspeople and small business owners at the market.

The PP also believes the venue could bring tourism and local produce together. The party proposes making use of the visitor numbers the municipality attracts to introduce visitors to its products, crafts and heritage, broadening the range of places and experiences they discover during their stay.

Calero said: “When we talk about backing quality tourism, we also mean showcasing what is ours. We want visitors to discover our products, crafts and villages, and to achieve that, the Town Council needs to promote and invigorate places like this.”

Support for producers, craftspeople and small businesses

The PP believes that a sustained publicity strategy, coupled with activities that can generate interest at different times of the year, would increase visitor numbers and strengthen the role of La Oliva Market in the municipality’s economic and social life.

The party is also encouraging residents and visitors to head to Casa de El Coronel on Tuesdays and Fridays, between 9:00 and 14:00, to explore what is on offer and directly support those who work there.

“Supporting our markets means supporting our producers, craftspeople and small businesses. It means backing our local economy and, at the same time, helping what makes us who we are gain greater prominence and visibility,” José Vicente Calero concluded.
