PP calls on Puerto del Rosario Town Council to unblock Tefía school canteen after years of waiting
PP calls on Puerto del Rosario Town Council to unblock Tefía school canteen after years of waiting.
Families at Tefía’s one-teacher school still have no school canteen, a situation that the People’s Party (PP) in Puerto del Rosario considers unjustifiable at this stage of the council’s term. The party is calling on the municipal government of CC and PSOE to speed up the outstanding works and arrangements needed to provide a service it regards as essential both for pupils and for families balancing work and home life.
Antonio Borrero, a PP councillor on Puerto del Rosario Town Council, regrets that a long-standing need remains unmet. ‘We are talking about a basic service for many families, who need to organise their working and personal lives knowing that their children can have a meal at school. It is unreasonable that, at this stage of the council’s term, people in Tefía are still waiting for a solution,’ he said.
The PP warns that the lack of this service forces parents to find alternatives for looking after their children once the school day ends, creating difficulties especially for those who have to fit their working hours around their family’s needs.
‘Behind this situation are families who have to make arrangements every day to collect their children, find someone to look after them or adapt their working hours. These are everyday difficulties that could be eased by a service they have been waiting far too long for,’ Borrero said.
The PP believes the Town Council must take responsibility and complete the work required to open the canteen. It says that acknowledging the need for the service is not enough unless that commitment leads to tangible progress.
The party is therefore calling on the municipal government to clarify the status of the works and outstanding procedures, what remains to be done and the expected timetable for opening the school canteen.
‘We are asking the Town Council to explain what remains to be done and when it intends to do it. Families need dates and concrete commitments, not to go on waiting indefinitely for a situation that directly affects their daily lives to be resolved,’ added Ana Padilla, the PP spokesperson in Puerto del Rosario.
Rural communities also need services that help families balance work and home life
For the PP, the situation at Tefía’s one-teacher school highlights the importance of ensuring that public services also reach the municipality’s rural communities.
The party argues that living in a village should not make it harder to access services that contribute to family wellbeing and equal opportunities for pupils.
‘People in our villages deserve the same services and opportunities as those who live in the capital. We cannot talk about supporting families and keeping our rural communities alive while such an important need as a school canteen remains unmet,’ Padilla said.
The PP insists that opening the canteen must be treated as a top priority, with the outstanding municipal work completed and families kept informed of progress.
‘Education and helping families balance work and home life cannot be left as good intentions. The Town Council must do its part so that the children of Tefía can have their school canteen as soon as possible. Families need solutions, verifiable commitments and firm dates, not more waiting,’ Antonio Borrero concluded.
