AMF’s critical faction: “We will not leave AMF”
Members of AMF’s Island Executive have filed appeals against the internal endorsement of Juan Nicolás Cabrera Saavedra’s candidacy for the Fuerteventura Island Council. They argue that Juan Cabrera Peña’s resignation does not automatically make the second-highest vote-getter, Juan Nicolás Cabrera Saavedra, the candidate: Juan Cabrera received nine votes from the Island Executive, compared with seven for Juan Nicolás Cabrera.
STATEMENT FROM AMF’S CRITICAL FACTION
The appeals, filed individually but with identical content, request documentation, guarantees of impartiality and the precautionary suspension of internal actions supporting the candidacy.
The signatories reaffirm their intention to remain in the party and thank members and supporters for their backing.
Fuerteventura, 24 October 2026. — Members of the Island Executive of Asambleas Municipales de Fuerteventura (AMF) have each individually filed internal appeals challenging the party’s decision or action endorsing Juan Nicolás Cabrera Saavedra’s candidacy for the Fuerteventura Island Council in the “Por Fuerteventura” electoral alliance. The appeals have identical wording.
They ask the party to establish which AMF body approved the proposal, under what procedure and with what authority under the party’s statutes. The appellants request access to meeting notices, minutes, certificates, voting records and mandates that would allow them to verify how the decision was reached.
According to the appeals, in the vote held by the Island Executive, Juan Cabrera Peña received nine votes and Juan Nicolás Cabrera Saavedra received seven. The appellants argue that the subsequent resignation of the person elected does not automatically make the second-highest vote-getter the candidate, and ask for any rule or agreement that might authorise such a substitution to be produced.
The appeals do not claim that internal agreements do not exist, but call for them to be disclosed and their validity verified. If valid and sufficient backing from the party’s governing bodies cannot be demonstrated, they ask for the internal decision in favour of Juan Nicolás Cabrera to be overturned and for a new decision to be taken by the competent bodies, following an explicit meeting notice, deliberation and vote.
They also ask the president to take no part in assessing, deliberating on or resolving the appeals, as they directly concern his own candidacy. He also chairs the Management Committee, the body that performs the functions of the Conflict Commission.
As a precautionary measure, they request the temporary suspension of the internal implementation of the challenged decision and of any further steps to formalise the candidacy that depend exclusively on AMF.
They also ask that the appeals be notified to the alliance and that steps be taken to prevent the candidacy from being finalised until the dispute is resolved. This suspension is explicitly requested and is not presented as an automatic consequence of filing the appeals.
These actions follow a request made yesterday by more than a third of the Island Executive’s members to the president, asking him to call an extraordinary meeting before 20:00 on Wednesday 28 October.
The extraordinary meeting had already been held on the evening of 23 October 2026, in accordance with the agenda proposed by its members. This included an explanation from the president about his candidacy, its non-recognition and the selection of a new candidate, as well as his replacement as AMF’s spokesperson in “Por Fuerteventura” and notification of the decisions to the alliance.
The signatories say the request is intended to strengthen the legal certainty of their actions. They warn that, if the president does not call the requested meeting within the stated deadline, the decisions taken at the Executive meeting on the evening of 23 October will have full legal effect.
Those behind the initiatives reaffirm their intention to remain in AMF and reject statements made by the president in the media which, they say, have sought to portray their actions as an intention to leave the party.
“We are not leaving AMF. We are using the party’s internal channels for participation and appeals to defend our rights and the party’s democratic functioning. The legitimate exercise of our constitutionally protected fundamental rights cannot be used as grounds for expelling us,” they said.
Finally, they thanked the members and supporters who had contacted them in recent days to express their backing. “We are grateful for the trust and support we have received. Our commitment to AMF continues, and we want the party’s decisions to be made with participation, transparency and all necessary safeguards,” they concluded.
