Fuerteventura is joining tributes of grief and solidarity this Thursday, 29 October, for the victims of the tragic train crash that occurred yesterday in the province of Toledo. The collision between two high-speed trains has killed at least 69 people, according to the provisional toll released, and left numerous others injured.
A minute’s silence was held at 11.00 on Thursday outside the Island Directorate of the General State Administration in Puerto del Rosario, in memory of the victims and in support of their families and everyone affected by the tragedy.
The ceremony is part of tributes taking place across Spain after the central government declared three days of official mourning, from Thursday 29 to Saturday 31 October inclusive.
During this period, national flags will fly at half-mast on all public buildings.
Widespread shock at the tragedy
The accident occurred on the morning of Wednesday, 28 October, near Urda in the province of Toledo, when two high-speed trains—one operated by Renfe and the other by Iryo—collided on the railway line connecting Madrid and Andalusia.
The scale of the disaster brought numerous emergency workers, medical staff, firefighters, Civil Guard officers and members of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) to the scene. They worked throughout the night to rescue people, search for the missing and recover the victims.
The death toll has risen since the first hours after the accident. Searches for missing people are continuing, while dozens of injured people are receiving medical care at hospitals across Castilla-La Mancha.
Meanwhile, work has begun to identify the bodies, and an investigation is under way to establish the circumstances that led to the collision.
Fuerteventura is joining this collective mourning with a minute’s silence in Puerto del Rosario, remembering the victims and supporting their families and those still in hospital.
