La Oliva takes first step towards charging tourists 56 cents per night
The new tourist levy has been backed by CC, PSOE and Nueva Canarias, while the PP voted against it after warning that the municipal treasurer had issued an unfavourable report.
Tourists staying in the municipality of La Oliva will have to pay a levy of 56 cents per person per night once the new fiscal ordinance, provisionally approved by the full Town Council this Thursday, comes into force.
The initiative, put forward by the governing coalition formed by Coalición Canaria and the PSOE, also passed with the support of Nueva Canarias councillor Oliver González. It did not, however, win the backing of the entire opposition. The Partido Popular voted against it, citing an unfavourable report from the municipal treasurer, while En Marcha abstained.
The amount will be the same for all visitors liable to pay, regardless of the category of tourist accommodation or the room price. The ordinance provides for some exemptions and requires accommodation providers to collect the charge from their customers and subsequently transfer the proceeds to the Town Council.
The aim of this new municipal revenue stream is to help fund the services and measures generated by tourism, which are particularly significant in a municipality such as La Oliva, home to a large share of northern Fuerteventura’s accommodation capacity. Councillors had already discussed this in an interview with La Voz de Fuerteventura.
The full council’s approval marks only the start of the administrative process. The text must undergo a period of public consultation before it can receive final approval and be officially published.
