Margarita Yakovenko, Carlos Bardem, Elena Medel and Jorge Volpi headline the literary finale of the Fuerteventura Book Fair
The Fuerteventura Book Fair will bring its programme to a close on Sunday with a literary line-up featuring, among other authors, Margarita Yakovenko, Elena Medel, Carlos Bardem and Jorge Volpi. New book launches and a conversation with the Mexican writer in the El escritor y tú series will lead the afternoon’s events, alongside family theatre and contemporary circus.
The Josefina Plá tent will host the main literary events. At 18:15, writer and journalist Margarita Yakovenko will present *Ocupación*, published by Seix Barral, in a discussion chaired by writer Javier Tendero.
The book begins with the death of the author’s grandfather in the Ukrainian city of Tokmak, occupied by the Russian army in 2022, and the subsequent confiscation of his home. From there, it reconstructs a century of family history. Through personal memory, history and fiction, Yakovenko explores the scars of war, displacement and the construction of identity.
At 18:45, Elena Medel will present *Todos mis pecados y la mitad de mi dolor*, published by Seix Barral, alongside journalist Nayra Bajo de Vera. The novel explores power relations, academic hierarchies and class differences through the story of a literature professor approaching the end of his career and the people whose lives he has shaped from his position of authority.
The programme will continue at 19:15 with another edition of *El escritor y tú*, featuring Jorge Volpi in conversation with Claudia Neira, director of the Centroamérica Cuenta festival. The Mexican writer, whose novels include *En busca de Klingsor* and *Una novela criminal*, will discuss his literary career and how he uses fiction to explore the links between history, politics, science and society.
At 20:00, Carlos Bardem will present *Triángulo*, published by AdN, in a discussion with journalist Manuel Riveiro. The actor and writer’s literary work includes novels such as *Alacrán enamorado* and *Mongo blanco*, and combines fiction with a critical perspective on power relations and social conflicts. The event will give the audience a chance to discover his latest narrative work.
The Fuerteventura Book Fair will bring its programme to a close at 20:30 with *De acero inolvidable*, a performance combining humour, poetry and live music to explore, with irony and without pulling its punches, the strengths and failings of the so-called macho ibérico. Actor Fernando Gil, known for playing Pedro Aguilar in the series *Machos Alfa*, will be accompanied by Argentine composer and musician Fernando Egozcue on guitar. The performance invites audiences to laugh at traditional stereotypes of masculinity.
The final day of the 36th Fuerteventura Book Fair will begin at 10:30. The Josefina Plá tent will host the presentation of *Luces y sombras del amor*, by José Manuel de la Torre Montenegro, published by Círculo Rojo. Journalist Pía Peñagarikano will take part.
The family programme will include *Triplette* at 11:00, a theatre performance by Catalan company LaBú Teatre & Cris Clown, staged in the square outside the Palace of Training and Congresses.
At 12:00, Marcos Hormiga will present *Patricio Anís*, published by Mercurio, at the Josefina Plá tent, with journalist Eduardo García Rojas. Book presentations will continue at 12:30 with *Lar*, by Bibiana Candia, published by Alfaguara. The author will be joined by literature teacher Libertad Morales.
At 13:00, the Josefina Plá tent will host the presentation of two publications: *La hija del viento*, by Binta Claire, and *Travesías*, by José Naranjo and Juan Luis Rod. Both were published by the Presidency Department of the Canary Islands Government.
Contemporary circus and theatre round off the programme
The afternoon’s cultural programme will include *Mahmud y no solo Mahmud* by Punto Cero Company at 17:00, a contemporary circus production from Madrid. The show will take place in the Symphony Hall of the Palace of Training and Congresses. It is recommended for audiences aged 12 and over, and admission is free with advance booking at culturafuerteventura.es.
Sunday’s programme also features events bringing literature and the performing arts to a range of audiences, from children to readers interested in contemporary fiction. Yakovenko, Medel and Bardem’s book presentations, together with Volpi’s conversation with Claudia Neira, will explore different approaches to identity, memory, social relations and the conflicts of the present day.
The Book Fair is organised by the Island Library Centre, which comes under the Culture Department of the Fuerteventura Island Council, with support from the Canary Islands Government’s Canary Islands Institute for Cultural Development. The regional government’s Deputy Ministry for Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Children and the Family is also taking part.
