Podemos Canarias accuses Costas of seeking to erase Jandía’s memory by demolishing the House of Pascuala Roger
In a statement sent on Monday, the party called for the demolition of the House of Pascuala Roger to be halted and denounced “double standards towards large hotels”.
Podemos Canarias is calling for the demolition of the House of Pascuala Roger, in Cueva de la Negra, Jandía, to be halted. The party warns that the loss of the building would mean losing a record of Majorera history and traditional architecture. It also questions the differing criteria applied to historic buildings and large tourist developments along the coast.
The party says the Directorate-General for Coasts must suspend any irreversible action until the property’s heritage value has been assessed.
The house was built around 1910 by Lorenzo Pérez Díaz. It bears witness to families who combined livestock farming with fishing and shellfish gathering. Its disappearance would mean losing one of the last traces of that way of life in Cueva de la Negra.
María Antonia Perera says coastal protection cannot ignore the history of the families who lived there. She also calls for “the authorities to apply transparent criteria and examine the legal alternatives before destroying this heritage”. Podemos Canarias says it is particularly important to clarify how traditional buildings are treated administratively compared with large tourist facilities.
The house retains features of traditional architecture adapted to the coastal climate of Fuerteventura. Its surroundings contain a shell midden with archaeological materials from the island’s aboriginal period, according to the heritage documentation provided. The party is calling for a full technical assessment and the involvement of the authorities responsible for historic heritage. It also says Pascuala Roger’s family must be heard and the legal options for preserving the house examined.
Podemos Canarias notes that the Coastal Law 22/1988 provides for the protection of the public maritime-terrestrial domain. The party supports its public ownership but calls for legal and heritage safeguards in its application. It also wants an explanation of the administrative criteria applied to large tourist developments, including the Hotel Riu Tres Islas.
According to the historical documentation provided, Cueva de la Negra had 16 houses around 1950. The House of Pascuala Roger is identified as the last property linked to that traditional community. Podemos Canarias supports the family’s request to preserve it and is calling for the demolition to be stopped while its rights and heritage value are examined.
