Puerto del Rosario welcomes €70 million approval for new courthouse
Mayor David de Vera says approval of the funding marks a decisive step towards delivering a strategic infrastructure project for the capital and Fuerteventura as a whole.
Puerto del Rosario Town Council has welcomed the Canary Islands Government’s approval of multi-year spending of €70,011,128 to award the contract for and carry out work on the new courthouse in Puerto del Rosario. The long-awaited facility will bring the various courts serving the capital’s judicial district together under one roof.
The project, promoted by the Canary Islands Government’s Department of Presidency, Public Administrations, Justice and Security, will be processed in advance during 2026. Once the contract has been awarded and work has begun, construction is expected to take four years.
Puerto del Rosario Mayor David de Vera said: “This is a decisive step towards making the new courthouse a reality at last. We are talking about an investment of more than €70 million that will give Puerto del Rosario and Fuerteventura modern facilities, designed to meet current and future needs and reflecting the capital’s importance as the island’s administrative and service centre.”
De Vera also highlighted the work undertaken by the different administrations to unblock a project that had been pending for years. “Coordination between the Canary Islands Government, the Fuerteventura Island Council and Puerto del Rosario Town Council has been essential in resolving the difficulties that arose and taking the necessary steps to reach this point. When public administrations work together, important projects for the public move forward,” he said.
Urban Planning Councillor Ana Hernández highlighted “the substantial technical and administrative work behind a project of this scale, and the cooperation between administrations to facilitate its development”.
Hernández said: “The new courthouse will not only significantly improve judicial facilities and services; it is also an important project from an urban-planning perspective and will help consolidate Puerto del Rosario’s status as the capital.”
She added: “The Town Council will continue to facilitate any procedures required within its remit so that the project can be delivered as soon as possible. This infrastructure will have a significant impact on this part of the city and must be properly integrated into Puerto del Rosario’s urban development.”
At present, Puerto del Rosario’s courts are spread across four separate sites. This makes it harder for the justice system to operate and for the public to access its services, while also limiting scope for future expansion.
The new building will bring all the courts serving the Puerto del Rosario judicial district together at a single site, improving conditions for legal professionals and users and modernising the delivery of an essential public service.
The detailed design is now in the final stages of review, enabling the budget to be scheduled and the contract value to be set at more than €70 million.
The future courthouse will be built on a plot of approximately 4,800 square metres between Avenida Juan de Bethencourt and Antonio Espinosa and Lucha Canaria streets. The Fuerteventura Island Council transferred the land to the Canary Islands Government to enable the project.
The proposed design is for a building with around 21,000 square metres of usable space across six floors, with facilities for the various courts and the services needed to bring together work currently carried out at different locations in the capital.
David de Vera stressed: “We are not simply talking about building a new facility. We are talking about improving an essential public service for Fuerteventura, making the day-to-day work of legal professionals easier and, above all, providing the public with a much more convenient and efficient service.”
“Puerto del Rosario continues to strengthen its role as Fuerteventura’s administrative and service centre. Approval of this €70 million is a fundamental step towards bringing to the city a public facility we have been waiting for for years,” the mayor concluded.
Puerto del Rosario Town Council will continue to work with the Canary Islands Government and the Fuerteventura Island Council on all necessary procedures to facilitate the contract award and the subsequent start of work on the new courthouse.
