Tourism department and Betancuria Town Council complete façade restoration in the Historic Villa
The tourism department and Betancuria Town Council have completed the restoration of façades in the Historic Villa.
The Canary Islands Government’s Ministry of Tourism and Employment, working with Betancuria Town Council, has completed improvement, refurbishment and façade restoration work on several streets in the Historic Villa on Fuerteventura.
The work has restored the traditional appearance of the historic centre, improving the town’s urban landscape and reinforcing its heritage value. The project was awarded for €117,701 and is part of the named grant programme ‘Spain’s Most Beautiful Villages in the Canary Islands’.
Héctor Mateo, Director General for Infrastructure, Sustainability and Tourism Quality, said the work helps preserve historic heritage and improve tourism infrastructure while respecting the town’s identity.
He also highlighted the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to Betancuria, including annual investment through programmes such as ‘Canary Islands Historic Capital Villa’ and ‘Spain’s Most Beautiful Villages in the Canary Islands’, as well as other recent initiatives related to infrastructure and sustainable projects.
Betancuria Mayor Enrique Cerdeña said the project had brought a significant improvement to the historic centre as a whole, enhancing the experience of residents and visitors.
The project was based on an initial study that identified and restored the original façade colours by removing accumulated layers of paint. The restored shades include indigo and garnet tones, characteristic of the Villa’s traditional architecture.
The work reinforces Betancuria’s heritage appeal and its standing as one of Fuerteventura’s leading cultural and tourism destinations.
